Hikkaduwa
Hikkaduwa is a seaside town in Sri Lanka which is situated in Southern province. The words sip and kaduwa, which in Sinhalese refer to knowledge and the sword respectively, are thought to have been combined to form the name Hikkaduwa. Sip is the short form of shilpaya. Hikkaduwa is said to mean sword of knowledge, so it makes sense.
There are over hundred thousand people living in the city. Hikkaduwa, like many other well-known resorts throughout the globe, was first discovered by hippie colonies in the 1970s. They chose the calm and quiet shores of a little village like Hikkaduwa at the time since they were well-versed in nice beach locations.
The location proved to be so prosperous that, after a few decades, it developed into a resort area, and the town expanded into a full metropolis. It is a well-known tourist destination because of its coral reefs and beaches. As soon as a person stops into the seashore of the city, he would undoubtedly feel young. The economy of Hikkaduwa has historically been built on coconut farming and fishing but later it was taken over by tourism. Currently, Hikkaduwa is a well-known board-surfing spot around the world. The city was impacted by the tsunami that resulted from the Indian Ocean earthquake in 2004.
Sewing machines were distributed to numerous families who had lost everything as part of the relief efforts after the tsunami.
